Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Health Information Management and Technology

If you currently hold a bachelor’s degree in any area, you may qualify for the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Health Information Management and Technology. This post-baccalaureate certificate will provide you with the knowledge and skills needed to not only qualify for high demand jobs in Health Information Management and Technology, but also allow you the opportunity to take the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)© credentialing exam. All HIM courses are offered online so you may “attend class” on your own schedule and within a global community of learners. 

To meet the high standards of the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management (CAHIIM) the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Health Information Management and Technology consists of 24 credits of core Health Information Management and Technology Courses.

Our curriculum will provide you with the basic knowledge and skills to prepare for multiple internationally recognized credentials:

  • American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) Certified Health Data Analyst (CHDA)
  • American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) Certified Documentation Improvement Practitioner (CDIP)
  • American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) Certified in Healthcare Privacy and Security (CHPS)
  • American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) Certified Professional Coder (CPC)
  • American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) Certified Physician Practice Manager (CPPM)
  • Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) American College of Medical Practice Executives (ACMPE)
  • Certified Physician Practice Executive (CMPE)

    Requirements

    Students are required to complete the following 24 credit hours.  It is recommended that HIM 1090 be taken first but courses may be completed in any sequence.  No courses may be completed for pass/fail.

    • HIM 1090 Information Systems for Global Healthcare (3 Credits)
    • HIM 2600 Global Healthcare Data and Statistics (3 Credits)
    • HIM 3400 Healthcare Revenue Cycle Management (3 Credits)
    • HIM 3750 Healthcare Classifications Systems (3 Credits)
    • HIM 3900 Clinical Documentation and Management of Health Information (3 Credits)
    • HIM 4250 Quality and Security of Health Information (3 Credits)
    • HIM 4600 Global Leadership and Strategic Planning for Health Professionals (3 Credits)
    • HIM 4800 Healthcare Information and Data Governance (3 Credits)

    Prerequisite / Concurrent Courses

    Depending on your previous education and experience, you may also need to complete the following: 

    • BIO 2300 Principles of Human Anatomy and Physiology Lecture I (3 Credits)
    • HIM 2050 Medical Terminology (3 Credits)
    • HIM 2080 PathoPharmacology for Healthcare Professionals (3 Credits)
    • CIS 4561 Database Management (3 Credits)
    * Prerequisites may be transferred in or waived due to healthcare license/credential and/or previous healthcare experience.
    * CIS 4561 may be completed concurrently with the post-baccalaureate program.
